Each side agrees to stop being aggressive. Sometimes a third party helps make the deal. A ceasefire can be short or long. It can be part of a formal treaty. It can also be an informal deal between forces.

Ceasefires have many goals. They can help send food and aid to people. They can also help leaders talk about peace. Some ceasefires are meant to last for a long time. Others are just a temporary break.

History shows many different kinds of ceasefires. In 1914, soldiers stopped fighting for Christmas. They sang songs and shared greetings. In 1953, a ceasefire helped end the Korean War. This created a special zone called the DMZ.
