An armistice is a formal plan to stop fighting. It comes from Latin words for "arms" and "stopping." This means a stop to weapons. An armistice is not a peace treaty. A treaty is a final plan for peace. A treaty can take many years to make. An armistice just stops the fighting for now. It gives people time to talk.

The groups fighting must agree to it. In 1953, an armistice ended fighting in the Korean War. It helped people seek a final peace.

One famous armistice happened in 1918. It was signed in France. It stopped the fighting in World War I. It took effect at eleven in the morning. This was the eleventh hour of the eleventh day. Many people now call this day Veterans Day or Remembrance Day. It is a time to honor those who served.
