Long ago, melting ice from the Ice Age made this lake. The lake has many islands and narrow paths of water. There are about 14,000 islands in this area. The shoreline is very long. Many towns sit near the water. These include Lappeenranta, Savonlinna, and Mikkeli. A special animal lives here. It is the Saimaa ringed seal. This seal lives only in this lake. The Saimaa salmon is also a rare fish found here. People use canals to move goods like wood and metal. Tourists also use these waterways for trips. Some people stay in summer cabins near the lake. A writer once said this place looks like a fairy tale.
