The park gets its name from the giant saguaro cactus. These huge plants are native to the Sonoran Desert. They do not grow naturally anywhere else in the world.

The two districts look and feel very different from each other. The Rincon Mountains are much higher and wetter than the Tucson Mountains. Because they are high, they are part of the Madrean Sky Islands. This means they hold many plants and animals that do not live in the Tucson area.

The Tucson Mountain District is lower and much drier. It has volcanic rocks on its surface. Over 30 million years ago, the Earth's crust stretched. This movement moved rocks from under the Tucson Mountains to form the Rincon Mountains.

Many different people have lived on this land throughout history. The Hohokam people lived in villages here from AD 200 to 1450. They left behind petroglyphs, which are rock carvings, and broken pottery.

Later, Spanish explorers and missionaries arrived in the region. In the late 1800s, miners came to look for silver and copper. Some miners worked at the Copper King Mine. Ranchers also brought cattle to graze on the land. Even small farms were built near the Rincon Mountains.

The park has grown in size over many years. In 1933, President Herbert Hoover created the original Saguaro National Monument.

This first monument was only in the Rincon Mountains. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy added the Tucson Mountain District. Finally, the United States Congress joined both districts into one national park in 1994. Today, the park covers a huge amount of land. About 70 percent of the park is protected wilderness.

Visitors can do many fun things in the park today. You can go hiking on many different trails. Some people like to go sightseeing along the paved roads.
