The park is lined by many museums and federal office buildings on both the north and south sides. Some people say the Mall includes even more areas. This includes West Potomac Park to the south and west. It also includes Constitution Gardens to the north.

The area can reach all the way to the Lincoln Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial.

A man named Pierre L'Enfant designed this space a long time ago. In 1791, he made a plan for the city of Washington, D.C.

He wanted a "grand avenue" that would be wide and lined with gardens. He wanted this space to be democratic and for everyone to use. This was different from palace gardens in France. Those gardens were often for only a few rich people.

The name "Mall" likely comes from a famous walking path in London. An old map from 1802 was the first to call this area the Mall.

There are many wonderful things to see and do here. Many of the museums belong to the Smithsonian Institution.

You can visit the National Museum of Natural History, which opened in 1910. The National Air and Space Museum opened in 1976. The National Museum of American History opened in 1964.

There are also many beautiful gardens. The Smithsonian Gardens looks after places like the Enid A. Haupt Garden. Some gardens, like the Pollinator Garden, help local nature.

The National Mall is more than just a park for looking at art. It is a place where people gather for big events.
