It tells the stories of a group of toddlers and infants. The main characters are Tommy Pickles, Chuckie Finster, and twins Phil and Lil DeVille. Tommy is a brave and adventurous one-year-old baby. His best friend is Chuckie, a two-year-old who wears glasses and is often scared. The babies go on huge adventures using their imaginations. These adventures turn everyday life into something much more exciting.

Most of these stories happen at Tommy's house. The babies have a big secret in the show. They can talk to each other when adults are not looking. Sometimes they talk even when adults are in the room. They just make sure there is plenty of space between them. This helps the babies navigate a world they do not fully understand yet.

Making the show was a big job for the creators. Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó, and Paul Germain started working on it in 1989. They wanted to make something special for Nickelodeon. The network wanted to start its own line of cartoons called "Nicktoons." Rugrats was the second show in that group. The creators even made a pilot episode called "Tommy Pickles and the Great White Thing." It was inspired by the antics of their own babies. They even drew inspiration from the music of The Beatles. The creators worked hard to make the characters feel unique.

One creator even wanted the babies to look "strange" instead of just "cute."

Producing the episodes followed a very specific way of working. It could take up to a whole year to make one episode. First, the writers would write and approve a story. Next, the voice actors would record their lines. Then, artists created the storyboards to plan the scenes. After that, the animation was made overseas. Finally, the team would edit and polish everything. For the first six seasons, episodes were usually two eleven-minute segments. Later in the series, they tried a format with three seven-minute segments. This careful work helped the show stay on the air for a long time.

Rugrats had a very long and successful history on television. The series premiered on August 11, 1991. It eventually ran for nine seasons and 172 episodes. The show stayed on the air until August 1, 2004. This long run makes it one of the longest-running animated series in America. It was also the top-rated show for Nickelodeon for many years. The show even released several big movies in theaters. These movies introduced new characters like Tommy's brother, Dil. They also introduced Chuckie's stepsister, Kimi. The series was so popular that it even received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Many people know Rugrats through different kinds of media. You can find the characters in video games and comics. There are also many toys based on the babies. The show was so loved that it even had a sequel series. This sequel is called "All Grown Up!" It shows what happens to the characters after ten years. A new version of the series also started in 2021 on Paramount+. The show has won over 20 awards. These include four Daytime Emmy Awards and six Kids' Choice Awards. Rugrats remains a very important part of animation history.
