His journey to greatness began with hard work and family support. Born in Surabaya in 1949, he was the third of eight children. At age 11, he began formal training with his father, Zulkarnain Kurniawan. They practiced almost all day in a small club inside a railway station warehouse. By age 12, he won his first junior tournament in Surabaya. Later, he joined the Rajawali Club to train with other top players. This path eventually led him to the National Training Center in 1965.

Hartono's career was filled with many famous victories and rivalries. In 1968, at just 18 years old, he became the youngest champion ever at the All-England tournament. He had to beat Tan Aik Huang from Malaysia to win. Throughout his career, he faced many great opponents like Svend Pri from Denmark. He also played against his fellow Indonesian, Liem Swie King. In 1980, he won the IBF World Championships in Jakarta. This was his only attempt at that specific world title.

He won many other important trophies across the globe.

He also earned two bronze medals in doubles events. During the 1972 Munich Games, he won the men's singles event. These many wins earned him a place in the Guinness Book of Records.

After he stopped playing professionally, Hartono stayed busy helping his sport. He worked with the Indonesian Badminton Association and the Badminton World Federation. Because of his good reputation, the United Nations named him a Goodwill Ambassador. He also grew his family businesses in dairy and sports equipment. Hartono also shared his faith through church ministry later in life. His life shows how dedication can turn a young player into a world hero.
