He lived a long time ago during the Samanid Empire. He is known as the founder of New Persian poetry. In Iran, people call him the founder of New Persian poetry. In Tajikistan, they call him the father of Tajik literature.

Rudaki was very skilled. By age eight, he knew the Qur'an by heart. He also learned to play the chang, which is a stringed instrument. He worked at a royal court. A poet there helped the ruler and gave good advice.

Rudaki wrote many verses. Some say he wrote over 180,000! Most of his work is lost today. One famous work was his version of the Kalila wa-Dimna. These are fables, or stories, from India. Because Rudaki was blind, people read the stories out loud to him. He then turned them into poems. His life ended in a hard way. He lived in poverty and died alone in his home village. People still honor his great talent today.
