Royal charter

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A royal charter is a very special kind of formal grant. A monarch issues these documents using their royal power. They are often written as letters patent. In the past, these papers were used to share public laws. The most famous example is the Magna Carta from 1215. Since the 1300s, they have changed how they are used. Now, they mostly grant rights or powers to specific groups.

These charters help create many important organizations. They can establish towns or boroughs with municipal charters. They are also used to start universities and learned societies. In the past, they were used to form big companies. These companies were often made to help with trade or travel. They were sometimes called chartered companies.

History shows many different groups received these grants. The British monarchy has issued more than 1,000 royal charters. About 750 of those are still in use today. One of the earliest recorded is from the year 1155. It was given to the Worshipful Company of Weavers by Henry I. Other old charters include ones from 1066 and 1067.

Universities have a long history with royal charters. The University of Naples was the first founded by an imperial charter in 1224. The University of Coimbra was the first founded by a royal charter in 1290. Many other schools followed in places like Poland and Austria. Some early charters in the British Isles were quite different. They gave rights to teach or settle disputes. They did not always give the power to award degrees.

Today, we see how these rules have become much clearer. In the 1800s, people had many debates about university powers. They argued if a charter must say a school can give degrees. Later, new rules made sure every charter was very specific. Now, a charter clearly states if a university can grant degrees. This helps everyone understand exactly what the group is allowed to do.
