It is the national academy of sciences for the United Kingdom. The society has many big jobs to do. It helps promote science and its many benefits. It also recognizes people who do excellent scientific work. The group gives advice to leaders about science and education. It even helps people from all over the world work together. This makes the society a key part of how we understand nature.

Members of the society work in a special way. The main members are called Fellows. There are about 1,700 Fellows in the group today. They elect a Council to lead the society. A President also leads the Council. Fellows pick the new leaders from among themselves. Each year, up to 73 new Fellows are chosen. They are picked from a group of about 800 candidates.

The history of the society began a long time ago. Before it was official, people met in small groups. Some called these groups the "Invisible College."

These people, like Robert Boyle, wanted to learn through experiments. They met at places like Gresham College in London. On November 28, 1660, twelve people met to start a formal college.

King Charles II gave them a royal charter in 1662. This made the Royal Society of London an official group. It is the oldest science academy that still exists today.

Many famous scientists have been part of this history. Sir Isaac Newton was a very important Fellow. He served as the President from 1703 until 1727.

During the 18th century, the number of Fellows grew to 300. The society also moved to new homes many times. In 1710, they bought houses in Crane Court on Fleet Street. These buildings held their offices and many interesting objects. Even when they had money problems, the society kept working hard.

Today, the society has a very steady life in London. Since 1967, it has stayed at Carlton House Terrace.
