Its name is Medieval Latin for "Great Charter." It matters because it set limits on how a king could rule.

Instead of a king having all the power, the charter suggested rules must be followed. This idea helped shape how many governments work today. It is seen as a symbol of liberty and individual rights.

Another big rule was about money and taxes. The king could not take certain payments without permission. To make sure the king followed these rules, a council of 25 barons was created. This group could watch the king and act if he broke his word.

He was an unpopular leader who lost lands in France. To pay for wars, he asked the barons for a lot of money. This caused great anger among the noble leaders.

In May 1215, rebel barons organized to resist his rule. They met the king at Runnymede, a meadow near Windsor.

There, Stephen Langton, the Archbishop of Canterbury, helped draft the agreement. On 15 June 1215, the charter was officially sealed.

Many different versions of the charter were made later.

After King John died, his young son Henry III reissued it in 1216. In 1225, Henry reissued it again to get new taxes.

Today, four original copies from 1215 still exist. Two are at the British Library and one is at Lincoln Castle.

The last one is at Salisbury Cathedral.

Even though it is very old, the charter changed the world.

It influenced the early American colonists very much. The United States Constitution used many of its ideas.

Historians now know it was mostly for barons, not everyone.
