The name Plantagenet might come from a yellow flower. This flower was called genista in old Latin. It is also known as the broom plant.

Life in England changed a lot during this time. The kings were not always able to do anything they wanted. They often had to make deals with other people. One very famous deal was the Magna Carta.

This document helped to limit the power of the king. It gave the king specific duties to follow. The kings had to work with a new justice system. This made the country run in a different way.

Over time, the kings started to act more like English rulers. King Edward III was a very important leader for this. He began to use Middle English for government business.

Middle English was the language that ordinary people spoke. This helped the kings connect more with their people. Historians see him as a very important cultural ruler. He helped create a new identity for the English throne.

Things became much harder in the 15th century. The family lost the Hundred Years' War.
