A royal charter is a special gift from a king or queen.

It is a formal paper that gives a group new rights. Long ago, kings used charters to make public laws. One famous example is the Magna Carta from 1215. Since the 1300s, they have been used for other things. Charters can help start towns or big groups. They were used to make companies for trade and travel.

One famous group was the Hudson's Bay Company.

Many universities use royal charters too. Some schools were started by a charter from a king. For example, the University of Coimbra was started in 1290. In the past, some charters did not let schools give out degrees. People had to debate if a charter could do that. Later, new rules made it clear. Now, charters clearly say if a school can give degrees.

The British monarchy has given over 1,000 of these charters. About 750 of them are still used today.
