Long ago in Britain, people used charters to give land. These papers were often written in Latin. Some were written on parchment, which is animal skin.

Kings and queens also used royal charters. A royal charter is a formal gift from a ruler. One famous example is the Magna Carta from the year 1215. These papers helped start big groups like universities. They also helped start towns and cities. When a town gets a charter, it can rule itself.

Today, we use the word in new ways. A charter school has its own set of rules. This makes it different from a state school. In business, a charter can start a corporation. A corporation is a large group that acts like one person. You can even charter a bus or a boat. This means you hire it for a trip. A charter can also help a group of people in a movement. It tells them their goals and how to work together.
