Because of the Volga-Don Shipping Canal, the city is known as a "port of five seas." This means ships can reach the Black Sea, the Caspian Sea, the Sea of Azov, the White Sea, and the Baltic Sea. The river port handles many goods. These include minerals, timber, and iron ore. The surrounding agricultural region is also very productive. It produces one-third of all vegetable oil from sunflowers in Russia.

This growth has helped transform the city into a technology-rich hub. In the 19th century, heavy industry began with an iron foundry in 1846. This was supported by coal from the Donets Basin and iron ore from Krivoy Rog. By the end of the 1800s, the city had about 140 industrial businesses. This industrial expansion caused the population to rise very quickly.
The history of the area reaches back to ancient times. Indigenous Scythian and Sarmatian tribes once lived near the mouth of the Don. Later, the site hosted an ancient Greek colony called Tanais. In 1749, Empress Elizabeth established a custom house on the Temernik River. This was done to control trade with Turkey. A fortress named after Dimitry of Rostov was built at the same time. The settlement was officially renamed Rostov-on-Don in 1806. In 1779, the city became associated with Nakhichevan-on-Don, a settlement of Armenian refugees. These two towns were eventually merged in 1928.
During the 20th century, the city faced many significant challenges. During World War I, the German Empire briefly occupied the city in 1918. During the Russian Civil War, both the Whites and the Reds fought for control. The city was the most heavily industrialized part of South Russia at that time. During World War II, Nazi German forces occupied the city twice. They held it from November 1941 to December 1941, and again from July 1942 to February 1943. The city was a strategic target because it was a railway junction. It also provided access to the oil and minerals of the Caucasus. In 1942, up to 30,000 Russian Jews were massacred at Zmievskaya Balka. It took ten years to fully restore the city after the war.
