There are many theories about the name Voronezh. For a long time, historians believed the name came from a man named Voroneg. He was allegedly a person from the Principality of Chernigov. Other theories suggest the name was moved from a different city to this region. However, modern researchers often criticize these ideas. They note that Russian cities usually take their names from rivers. In 2015, historian Pavel Popov conducted a scientific analysis. He concluded that Voronezh is likely a Slavic macrotoponym. This means the name refers to a large geographic area. He linked the name to the Proto-Slavic root "voron," meaning black or dark.
