Newcastle upon Tyne is a major city in North East England.
The history of the area began with a Roman settlement. The Romans called this site Pons Aelius. This name means "Aelian bridge." It was named after the Roman emperor Hadrian. He likely visited the site during his tour of Britain. The settlement included a Roman fort and a bridge. Fragments of Hadrian's Wall are still visible near West Road. The wall was 73 miles long. It served as a defense against Pictish tribes from the north. The River Tyne acted as a secondary line of defense.
After the Romans left, the area became part of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria. During this time, the settlement was known as Munucceaster. This is sometimes modernized as Monkchester. The town faced many conflicts, including battles with the Danes in 876. In 1080, Robert Curthose built a wooden castle at the site. He was the eldest son of William the Conqueror. This castle gave the town its new name, Novum Castellum.

During the Middle Ages, Newcastle functioned as a northern fortress for England. In 1400, Henry IV made the town a county of its own. This separated it from Northumberland for administrative purposes. The town built a 25-foot-high stone wall in the 13th century. This wall protected the citizens during wars with Scotland. The city successfully defended itself against the Scots three times in the 14th century. Famous figures like William Wallace and King William the Lion passed through the town.
The Industrial Revolution transformed Newcastle into a global powerhouse. The city became one of the world's largest centers for shipbuilding and repair.

Innovation was a constant theme throughout the city's industrial era. Many important inventions emerged from this region. These include safety lamps and the steam turbine invented by Charles Parsons. The steam turbine changed marine propulsion and electricity production.

In the modern era, Newcastle has shifted toward a service and education economy. The city is home to major institutions like Newcastle University.
