A sitcom is a funny show about daily life. This series follows the Conner family in a fictional town called Lanford, Illinois. The Conners are a working-class family. This means they work hard to afford what they need. They live at 714 Delaware Street. The show became very popular because it felt real to many people. It showed a family with two parents working outside the home. It also showed characters who were overweight without making them the butt of jokes.

The show follows the lives of Roseanne and her husband, Dan. Roseanne is an outspoken woman who works many different jobs. She has worked at a plastics factory and a luncheonette. She has also worked as a telemarketer and a cashier. Dan is a construction contractor who later opens a motorcycle shop. They have three children named Becky, Darlene, and D.J. Later, they have a fourth child named Jerry Garcia Conner.

The family faces many common life events together. They even have to survive a tornado in one episode.

Producers Marcy Carsey and Tom Werner created the show. They wanted to focus on the voice of a working mother. Before this, most shows treated working mothers as side characters. They chose Roseanne Barr to play the lead role. They saw her unique attitude on The Tonight Show. Many women wrote the early scripts for the series. One woman, Laurie Gelman, was the first female writer-producer on the show. Matt Williams was the original showrunner and received credit as the creator.
