Senators met in special buildings. They often held meetings at dawn. They would make sacrifices to the gods before they spoke. In the Republic, the Senate could give advice to leaders. These pieces of advice were called decrees. Most leaders followed them. As time went on, the Senate lost its power. Later, the Senate in Rome became much smaller. It eventually disappeared, but a Senate lived on in the East for a long time.
