Each king had many big jobs. They led the army in war. They also acted as judges for the people. The kings were the chief priests too. They led the city in prayer to the gods.

A group of wise men helped the king. This group was called the Senate. The king chose who could join the Senate.

The Senate gave advice, but the king held the most power. He could make laws and choose officials.

Most kings were chosen by the people. They ruled for their whole lives. But the last king, Tarquinius Superbus, was different. He took power by force and was a tyrant. This means he ruled in a mean way. After the kings, Rome changed. The people started a new way to rule called a Republic. This was a very big change for the city.
