Brutus and Lucius Tarquinius Collatinus became the first consuls. Consuls were leaders who ruled Rome together. Brutus made the people swear an oath. They promised to never allow a king to rule Rome again.

Being a leader was hard for Brutus. A group tried to bring the kings back to power. This plot included his own sons. Brutus had to watch them be punished for their part in it. He also fought in a big battle against the king's family. Brutus died in that fight.
