The Roman Curia is a central group of offices.

These offices help the Holy See manage the Catholic Church. Many people call it the Vatican Curia. However, that name is not quite correct. The Curia is actually the administrative body for the Holy See. It helps the Pope carry out his global mission. It also serves the bishops around the world.

This group works much like a government cabinet. It has different parts to handle many jobs. One important part is the Secretariat of State. This is the oldest section in the Curia. It helps the Pope with his main mission. It is split into three main sections. One section handles daily service for the Pope. Another section manages relations with other countries. The third section helps the Church's diplomatic staff.

History shows how the Curia has changed over time. Pope Urban II created the Curia long ago. He ruled from the years 1088 to 1099. In the past, the word "curia" meant a royal court. Some people even called it the Court of Rome. Over the years, many leaders changed how it works. Pope Pius X ordered a reorganization long ago. Later, Pope Paul VI started reforms in the 1960s. These changes helped make the staff more international.

Today, the rules for the Curia are very specific. Pope Francis issued a new law on March 19, 2022. This law became active on June 5, 2022. It replaced an older law from Pope John Paul II. The law from 1988 was fully replaced by this new one. Most members serve for five-year terms. They are often Cardinals or bishops. Some experts, like priests or lay people, also help. These members usually return to their home parishes after five years.

There are many other ways the Curia helps the Church. For example, the Central Statistics Office does important work. It conducts many studies throughout the year. They create a huge book called the Statistical Yearbook of the Church. This book is about 500 pages long. It tracks the number of baptized people in every country. This helps everyone understand the Church's global community. The Curia makes sure the Church stays united and organized.
