Rollo May was an American psychologist. He studied how people think and feel. He is famous for existential psychotherapy. This is a way to help people understand their lives. He also wrote many books. One very popular book was called Love and Will. It won an award in 1970.

May had a busy life. He was born in Ohio in 1909. He studied English at college. Later, he studied psychology. He even taught in Greece for three years. He also worked as a minister. In 1942, he had to rest for 18 months. He had a sickness called tuberculosis.

He had big ideas about how we grow. He said people go through different stages. One stage is called innocence. This is when babies just do what they must. Another stage is rebellion. This is when people want freedom. He also spoke about three worlds. The Umwelt is the world around us. The Mitwelt is our world of relationships. The Eigenwelt is our own inner world. These parts help us know ourselves.
