Rollo May was an important American psychologist and writer. He helped create a way to help people called existential psychotherapy. This method focuses on how people find meaning in their lives. He was a major part of a group called humanistic psychology. This group looks at the whole person and their potential. His ideas were very influential in the world of mental health.

He wanted to understand the deep parts of being human. He believed that even hard feelings like anxiety could help a person grow.

May had many different ideas about how people develop. He described four stages of growth that people experience. First is innocence, which is when infants just do what they must. Next is rebellion, where people want freedom but do not yet understand responsibility. Then comes the ordinary stage, where adults might follow rules just to feel safe. Finally, there is the creative stage, which is when a person becomes their true self.

These stages are not a strict ladder. A person can move between them at different times in their life.

He also taught that we live in three different worlds at once. The first is the Umwelt, or the world around us. This includes things like our biology and our fate. The second is the Mitwelt, which is our world of relationships. This is how we interact with other people and learn responsibility. The third is the Eigenwelt, or our own inner world.

This is where we explore our own identity and self-awareness. All three worlds work together to shape how we see everything.

May's life was full of many different experiences. He was born in Ada, Ohio, on April 21, 1909. He studied English at Michigan State and Oberlin College. He even spent three years teaching at Anatolia College in Greece. In 1942, he had to spend 18 months in a sanatorium for tuberculosis. Later, he earned a PhD in clinical psychology from Columbia University in 1949.

He was a close friend of the philosopher Paul Tillich.

He wrote many famous books during his long career. His book Love and Will was published in 1969. It became a best-seller and won the Ralph Waldo Emerson Award in 1970. He also wrote The Courage to Create in 1975. Another important work was The Meaning of Anxiety, which he wrote in 1950.

May died in 1994 at the age of 85. He left behind a huge legacy in the study of the human mind.
