Otto Rank was a famous thinker who studied the human mind.

He was born Otto Rosenfeld in 1884 in Vienna, Austria. His family were Jewish artisans. Rank was a writer, a philosopher, and a psychoanalyst. A psychoanalyst is a doctor who helps people understand their feelings. He became a very important member of Sigmund Freud's circle. Freud was a leader in studying how the mind works. Rank even served as the secretary for the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society.

Rank's ideas changed how we think about growing up. In 1924, he published a book called "The Trauma of Birth."

In this book, he suggested that the shock of being born is a huge event. He believed this event shapes how people feel and act long before other stages of life. This idea was different from Freud's views. Rank used the term "pre-Oedipal" to describe this early stage. Because of these new ideas, Rank and Freud had a big disagreement. Rank moved away from Freud's theories to focus on his own way of thinking.

Rank also changed how therapy works for people.

He believed that therapy should be a shared experience between two people. He worked with Sándor Ferenczi to create new ways of helping. They thought therapy should focus on real, lived experiences. Instead of just looking at old drives, they focused on how people connect. Rank believed that emotions happen because of our relationships with others. He wanted therapy to help people use their creative will. This helped people find new ways to think and act in the present.

Rank's life took him to many different places.

He left Vienna in 1926 to live in Paris and the United States. He spent much of his time in New York City. There, he gave many lectures and practiced his work. He wrote many famous books, such as "The Double" and "Art and Artist." He also studied great artists like Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. Rank died in New York City on 31 October 1939. He died from a kidney infection. His last words were reportedly "Komisch."

Today, we can still see Rank's influence everywhere.

His ideas helped start new ways of counseling. For example, Carl Rogers used Rank's lectures to help create client-centered counseling. His work also helps social workers and teachers. People use his ideas to help teams solve problems through "action learning." This method helps people step out of old ways of thinking. Rank believed that being creative is a way to keep growing. He taught that we must learn to let go of old identities to find new ones.
