He is often called the first existentialist philosopher. This means he focused on how people live. He cared about personal choice and being true to oneself. He also wrote about love and faith. Kierkegaard did not want to just study big ideas. He wanted to understand real human life.

Kierkegaard was very critical of the Church in Denmark. He felt the church was too tied to the state. He believed faith was a personal thing. It was a deep, inner feeling. He used stories and metaphors to share these ideas. Sometimes he even wrote using fake names. This let him show many different points of view.

He kept very detailed journals. He wrote over 7,000 pages in them! These journals help us understand his many thoughts. He lived in Copenhagen. He loved to walk the streets. He would talk to everyone, even the poor.
