He studied how radiation affects living things. Radiation is a type of energy. Sievert wanted to know how it works in the body. He studied how small amounts of radiation work over time. This helped doctors use radiation to find and treat cancer.

Sievert made many tools to measure radiation. One famous tool was the Sievert chamber. He also helped start a group to keep people safe. This group is now called the ICRP. Because of his work, he is called the "Father of Radiation Protection."

In 1979, leaders chose a new unit of measure. This unit measures the risk of radiation to health. They named it the sievert (Sv) after him. He was born in Stockholm in 1896. He worked at the Karolinska Institute for many years. Sievert also had a hobby. He collected many insects. You can find his insect specimens at a museum in Sweden.
