Rolf Maximilian Sievert was a very important scientist from Sweden.

He was a medical physicist who studied radiation. Radiation is a type of energy that can affect living things. Sievert wanted to know how this energy works in the body. His work helped doctors find and treat cancer safely. Many people call him the "Father of Radiation Protection." This is because he helped people stay safe from radiation.

Sievert looked at how radiation affects health in a special way. He studied how small doses of radiation work over time. He wanted to see what happens from repeated exposure. To do this, he invented many tools to measure doses. One of his most famous tools was the Sievert chamber.

This tool helped measure the energy being used. He used these measurements to help with medical diagnosis and treatment.

His career began in many important places in Sweden. He was born in Stockholm in 1896. His father, Max Sievert, started a company in 1881. Rolf worked at Radiumhemmet from 1924 until 1937. He was the head of the physics laboratory there. Later, he became the head of radiation physics at the Karolinska Institute.

He was a member of two very famous science academies.

Sievert also worked to make rules for safety around the world. In 1928, he helped start a group called the IXRPC. This group was the first to focus on X-ray and radium protection. It later became a group known as the ICRP. He also led the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation.

These groups helped set standards for everyone to follow. He lived until October 3, 1966.

Today, we remember him through a special unit of measure. In 1979, a big meeting called the CGPM made a choice. They named the unit for radiation dose equivalent the "sievert." It is written as Sv.

This unit helps scientists talk about health risks from radiation. Sievert also had a fun hobby outside of his lab work. He collected many different insects. You can see his insect collection at the Entomological Museum of Lund University.
