Alice Stewart was a doctor from England. She was an epidemiologist. An epidemiologist is a scientist who studies how health affects groups of people. Her parents were also doctors. They worked to keep children well.

Alice studied how radiation can harm health. Radiation is a type of energy. She did a big study from 1953 to 1956. She looked at x-rays. X-rays are a type of light used to see inside the body. She found that x-rays given to pregnant women could cause cancer in their children. At first, many people did not believe her. Later, the world accepted her findings. This helped make medical tests safer for mothers and babies.

After she retired, Alice did more work. She studied workers at a plant in Washington. This was a plant that made plutonium. She found that even low doses of radiation could cause illness. Some people disagreed with her math. However, many people now value her work. She showed that we must be careful with radiation. In 1986, she won the Right Livelihood Award for her work.
