Many people called him the "Doctor Mirabilis." This was a special title used to show how much he knew. He spent his life studying nature and how the world works. He believed that looking at real things was the best way to learn. This way of thinking is very similar to how scientists work today.

Bacon used a method called empiricism to find the truth.

He was very interested in optics, which is the study of light. He even drew diagrams to show how light moves through water. He also wrote down a formula for gunpowder. While gunpowder was invented in China, Bacon was the first in Europe to record it.
