The Rocky Mountains are a massive chain of mountains in North America.

They are the largest mountain system on the continent. This range stretches 3,000 miles in a long, straight line. It starts in Western Canada and reaches down to New Mexico in the United States.

The mountains vary in width from 70 to 300 miles. They are the easternmost part of a larger area called the North American Cordillera. Many famous peaks and valleys sit within this huge landscape.

These mountains formed a long time ago through a process called tectonics. Between 55 and 80 million years ago, large plates of the Earth began to move. In the United States, one plate dove under another at a very shallow angle. This movement pushed the crust upward to build the broad range we see today. Later, huge sheets of ice called glaciers moved across the land. These glaciers carved the mountains into dramatic shapes with U-shaped valleys.

The ice helped create the sharp peaks and deep basins found there now.

People have a long history with these mountains. Humans began living in the range at the end of the last ice age. Later, explorers like Sir Alexander Mackenzie traveled through these lands. The Lewis and Clark Expedition also explored the area. Many people came to the mountains to find natural resources. They looked for minerals and fur to trade.

While they used the land for work, the mountains never had a very large population.

There are many important places and numbers to know about the Rockies. Mount Elbert in Colorado is the highest peak at 14,440 feet.

The mountains also hold the Continental Divide. This is a line where water flows in different directions. Water on one side goes to the Atlantic Ocean, and water on the other goes to the Pacific. Some water even flows toward the Arctic Ocean.

Today, the Rockies are a very popular place for visitors. Many areas are protected in public parks and forest lands. People visit to enjoy the outdoors in many different ways. You might see people hiking, camping, or mountain biking on the trails. Others come to go fishing, hunting, or snowmobiling. In the winter, people love skiing and snowboarding on the snowy slopes.
