As a child, he expressed a desire to emulate the style of Elvis Presley. After leaving grammar school, he briefly studied to become a chartered accountant. However, he abandoned this path after only two weeks to pursue music. He moved from group to group to study the blues. This included playing in local bands like the Band of Joy with drummer John Bonham. He also held various jobs, such as laying tarmac on roads for a construction company. These early experiences helped him build a deep knowledge of musical styles.\n\nIn 1968, a major turning point occurred when guitarist Jimmy Page sought a new singer.

After hearing Plant perform, Page recruited him for a new project. This group was initially called the New Yardbirds. It soon became known as Led Zeppelin. The band's debut album in 1969 helped trigger the rise of the heavy metal genre. While often associated with heavy metal, Plant noted that nearly one-third of the band's music was acoustic. This combination of styles helped define their unique sound during the late 1960s and 1970s.\n\nPlant's songwriting process involved many complex and mystical themes.

He often wrote lyrics that referenced classical and Norse mythology. For example, the song \"Immigrant Song\" alludes to Viking conquests and Valhalla. He was also heavily influenced by the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien. Songs like \"The Battle of Evermore\" and \"Ramble On\" contain references to Tolkien's Middle-earth. Additionally, his time spent in Wales inspired him to explore Welsh mythology. He even purchased a Welsh sheep farm in 1973 to connect with the land. This connection is reflected in songs like \"Bron-Y-Aur Stomp.\"\n\nAs a performer, Plant helped establish the \"rock god\" archetype. [IMAGE:
