Robert Cialdini is a famous American psychologist. He studies how people act and why they change their minds. This study of changing minds is called persuasion. He is a very important teacher at Arizona State University. He has also taught at Stanford University. His work helps us understand how people influence one another in real life.

Cialdini learned how persuasion works by watching people. He spent three years doing undercover work to see how it happens. He trained at used car dealerships and fund-raising groups. He also worked at telemarketing firms to observe real situations. He looked for the ways people try to convince others. This helped him find the rules of influence.

He found six main ways that people influence others. These are reciprocity, commitment and consistency, social proof, authority, liking, and scarcity. In 2016, he added a seventh way called the unity principle. This means we are more influenced by people we feel connected to. He shared these ideas in his 1984 book, Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion. This book became very popular all over the world.

His books have reached millions of readers. His writings have sold more than seven million copies. These books are translated into 44 different languages. His work has appeared on the New York Times Best Seller list. He even helped with big presidential campaigns. He worked for Barack Obama in 2012. He also advised Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Cialdini has earned many honors for his research. He joined the National Academy of Sciences in April 2019. The Society for Personality and Social Psychology even named a prize after him. This prize honors research that helps society. You might see his ideas in ads or when people ask for help. Understanding his work helps us see how the world works.
