He is a professor at the New York University Stern School of Business. Haidt focuses on the psychology of morality. He wants to know why we feel certain things are right or wrong. His work helps us understand how our feelings guide our choices. He is a very important thinker in the world of science.

One of his big ideas is called moral foundations theory. He says we have built-in ways to judge the world. He compares these to the taste buds on a tongue. Just as we have different tastes for food, we have different moral feelings. These include care, fairness, loyalty, authority, and sanctity.

He also added liberty as a sixth foundation. These feelings help us build different kinds of cultures and societies.

Haidt uses a special story to explain how our minds work. He calls it the elephant and the rider. The elephant represents our fast, automatic gut feelings. The rider represents our slow, thinking brain.

In his view, the elephant usually leads the way. The rider then tries to find reasons to explain why the elephant moved. This helps us see why it is hard to change our minds.

Haidt has had a very busy career. He was born in 1963 in Scarsdale, New York. He studied at Yale University and finished his PhD at the University of Pennsylvania in 1992. He later taught at the University of Virginia for many years. He moved to New York City in 2011. He has written many famous books. These include The Happiness Hypothesis in 2006 and The Righteous Mind in 2012. He also wrote The Anxious Generation in 2024.

His work connects to many things we see every day. He studies how smartphones might change how children grow up. He also looks at why political groups disagree so much. He co-founded a group called Heterodox Academy to help people share different ideas. He wants people to have more mutual understanding. By studying our emotions, he hopes to help people live better lives. His ideas help us look closely at our own hearts and minds.
