Robert David Putnam is a famous American political scientist. He is a professor at Harvard University. He studies how people live and work together in a society. He focuses on a special idea called social capital. This is the way people build networks and trust. When people trust each other, they can work well together. This helps things like trade and democracy to grow.

Putnam looks at how social capital works in a community. He says it comes from people joining groups. These groups can be clubs, guilds, or choral societies. He found two main types of this connection. The first type is called bonding capital. This happens between people who are very similar. The second type is called bridging capital. This happens when different kinds of people join together. Both types help a society stay peaceful and strong.

Putnam began his big studies many years ago. He was born in Rochester, New York, in 1941. He grew up in Port Clinton, Ohio. He went to Swarthmore College and later Yale University. In 1993, he published a book about Italy. He studied how different parts of Italy worked. He saw that northern Italy had more social capital. This was because they had many clubs and groups. This helped their economy and their government stay strong.

His most famous work is a book called Bowling Alone. He published it in 2000. He noticed a big change in America since the 1960s. Many people used to join bowling leagues. These leagues showed how much people connected. Now, many people bowl alone instead of in groups. He also studied how diversity affects trust. He looked at 40 cases and 30,000 people. He found that diversity can change how much people trust neighbors in the short term. However, he says diversity brings many benefits in the long run.

Putnam has done a lot of important work. He has been the president of the American Political Science Association. In 2013, President Barack Obama gave him the National Humanities Medal. This award was for helping us understand community. He also works to help Americans connect again. He started the Saguaro Seminar to talk about these ideas. He even helped create a book called Better Together. This book shows ways to build new community connections.
