People go on these trips for many different reasons. Some families drive to see famous sights like the Grand Canyon. Others travel to visit friends or relatives who live far away. Some people even use road trips to move to a new home. A survey in 2022 found that many Americans go on about seven road trips in their lives. Most drivers say they enjoy the chance to bond with family and friends. They also like having the flexibility to stop whenever they want.

Road trips work by using a vehicle to travel across long distances. In the past, these trips took a very long time to finish. Early travelers had to worry about finding food, gas, and places to sleep. They also had to carry extra parts to fix their cars. Today, better roads and stronger cars make the journey much easier. The Interstate Highway System helped make driving faster and safer. Now, an average family can cross much of North America in just one week.

Long-distance driving has a very interesting history. The first recorded car road trip happened in Germany in August 1888. Bertha Benz drove a Benz Patent-Motorwagen from Mannheim to Pforzheim. She took her two sons, Richard and Eugen, along for the ride. She did not tell her husband, Karl Benz, about her secret plan. She wanted to show the world that his invention worked well.

This trip helped the Benz family business grow into the Mercedes-Benz company.

Many famous people helped make road trips popular in North America. In 1903, H. Nelson Jackson and Sewall K. Crocker drove across the country. They used a Winton Touring Car named "Vermont" and brought a dog named Bud. Their trip from San Francisco to New York took 63 days. In 1909, Alice Huyler Ramsey became the first woman to cross the American landscape by car. She traveled from Manhattan to San Francisco over 59 days.

Road trips are a big part of how we see the world. Many books, movies, and songs are about traveling on the open road. For example, the song "Route 66" is about towns along a famous highway. U.S. Route 66 is a famous road that started in 1926. People use road trips to find special places they might otherwise miss. About 46% of drivers find new restaurants during their travels. Many others discover historic locations or fun roadside attractions along the way.
