The first long road trip in a car happened in 1888. A woman named Bertha Benz drove from Mannheim to Pforzheim in Germany. She took her two sons with her. She wanted to show people that her husband's car worked well.

In North America, the first big trip across the land was in 1903. H. Nelson Jackson drove a car named "Vermont." He was joined by Sewall K. Crocker and a dog named Bud.
