Riyadh Province

Riyadh Province is a major administrative region in Saudi Arabia.

It sits at the geographic center of the country. This province also occupies the center of the Arabian Peninsula. It is a massive territory covering 380,000 square kilometers. This size makes it the second-largest region in the kingdom by area. However, it holds the title of the largest region by population.

The geography of the province is quite distinct. Approximately half of the total land area is desert. This region is one of seven areas in Saudi Arabia without a coastline. It does not touch any ocean or sea. Instead, it is surrounded entirely by other Saudi provinces.

The city of Riyadh is the most populous city in the entire region. It is also the most populous city in the kingdom. A huge portion of the people live in this urban center. In fact, a little less than two-thirds of the province's population resides within Riyadh city.

Beyond the capital, several other cities are quite populous. These include Al Ghat, Dawadmi, Afif, Zulfi, and Majma'ah. The province is organized into specific administrative subdivisions. There are 19 governorates, known as muhafazat, within the region. There is also one sub-governorate, called a markaz.

This structure helps the government manage the large number of residents across the vast desert and urban landscapes.

Leadership has played a significant role in the province's history. Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz governed the region for nearly five decades. His rule lasted from 1963 until 2011. This long period of leadership preceded his rise to higher office. In 2012, he became the Crown Prince of the kingdom. Currently, the governance of the province is held by Prince Faisal bin Bandar. This lineage of leadership is a notable part of the region's modern history.
