It lives in dry, rocky areas of North America. This animal is part of the raccoon family. It has dark fur and a pale belly. Dark hair around its eyes looks like a mask.

Its tail is very long. It has 14 to 16 black and white stripes. The tail helps the ringtail stay balanced on narrow ledges. It can even help them do a cartwheel to turn around. The white rings can also trick hunters. A predator might grab the tail instead of the body. This gives the ringtail a chance to run away.

Ringtails are nocturnal. This means they are active at night. They have large eyes to see in the dark. They are also great climbers. Their ankle joints can rotate 180 degrees. This helps them move easily on rocks.

They are omnivores. This means they eat both plants and animals. They eat insects, berries, and small animals like mice. They can even live a long time without drinking much water. They get most of their water from their food.
