It lives in warm, leafy forests. These forests are in Mexico and Central America. The cacomistle is nocturnal. This means it is active at night. It likes to live high in the trees.

This animal has grey or brown fur. It has a very long, striped tail. The tail has black and white stripes. The tip of the tail is solid black. You can tell it apart from its relative, the ringtail, by its pointed ears. The cacomistle also has claws that can pull back.

Cacomistles eat many different things. They are omnivores, which means they eat both plants and animals. They eat fruit, flowers, and nectar. They also eat bugs, lizards, and frogs. They often find food in bromeliads. These are plants that hold rainwater high in the trees.

These animals like to live alone. A single cacomistle needs a large home. Its home can be as big as 20 sports fields. A mother has one baby after two months. She teaches the baby how to hunt. Then the baby finds its own home.
