It lives in dry, rocky parts of North America. You might know it by other names like the ring-tailed cat or the miner's cat. It is the state mammal of Arizona. These animals are very good at living in dry places. They are found in many deserts, like the Sonoran and the Chihuahuan.

Even though they look like cats, they are only distantly related to true cats.

This animal has many special ways to move. Its body is dark brown or black with a pale belly. It has a pointed face with a dark mask around its eyes. The most famous part is its long tail with 14 to 16 stripes.

This tail helps the ringtail stay balanced on narrow ledges. It can even do a cartwheel to turn around! Their ankle joints can rotate 180 degrees. This lets them climb down walls very easily. They can even squeeze through narrow cracks by bouncing between the sides.

Ringtails are mostly nocturnal, which means they are active at night. They have large eyes and upright ears to help them see and hear in the dark. They often live alone, but they come together in the spring to mate.

During the spring, a male will find food for the female. She will then have a litter of 2 to 4 kits. The babies open their eyes after one month. They can hunt on their own after four months. In the wild, these animals usually live for about seven years.

Finding food is an important job for the ringtail. They are omnivores, which means they eat both plants and animals. In the winter, they eat small animals like mice, rats, and rabbits.

In the spring and summer, they eat more insects and fruit. They enjoy berries from plants like juniper or prickly pear. They can even eat things from bird feeders! These animals are very good at saving water. They can get most of their water just from the food they eat.

Many animals try to hunt the ringtail, such as owls and hawks.

To stay safe, the ringtail can spray a scent called musk when it is scared. This helps them avoid predators. Long ago, people called them "miner's cats." Miners kept them in cabins to catch pests like mice. Today, they are still a wonderful part of the desert wild. You can find them in many places from Mexico to Oregon.
