Ricinulei are a small group of arachnids. They are hunters that eat tiny creatures. Most live in West-central Africa or the Americas. They hide in dark caves or under leaves.

These animals have a very thick outer shell. Their most famous part is a hood called a cucullus. This hood can move up and down. When it moves down, it covers their mouth.

Living ricinuleids have no eyes. Instead, they use their legs to feel the world. Their second pair of legs is very long. They use these legs like antennae to feel far ahead. Their pedipalps, which are small limb parts, help them touch food nearby.

When they are babies, they have only six legs. They grow more legs as they get older. This is a trait they share with mites and ticks. Fossils show these animals have lived for over 300 million years. Some ancient ones were much larger than the ones we see today.
