He was a talented writer and a composer. He worked as a librettist, which means he wrote the words for operas. He also wrote plays and his own musical pieces. People in the 1800s loved his creative work. His stories helped bring joy to many theater audiences. He spent his life making art that people could sing and watch.

Genée had many ways to make music. In 1857, he served as a conductor for the Philharmonic Orchestra Mainz. He did not just write words for others to use. He also composed his own music for shows. For example, he wrote an operetta in 1876 called Fatinitza. He even wrote a piece for a choir called Insalata Italiana. In that piece, the singers used Italian musical words to tell a story. This showed how he could mix language and sound together.

His life began in a place called Danzig. He was born there on February 7, 1823. Later in life, he moved to Austria. He lived and worked there for many years. He eventually passed away in Baden bei Wien on June 15, 1895. Throughout his life, he worked with many different musical partners. He often teamed up with a man named Friedrich Zell. Together, they created many famous shows that people enjoyed very much.

Genée is most famous for writing the words for Die Fledermaus. This is a very famous operetta by Johann Strauss II. He also worked with a writer named Karl Haffner on this show. They used a story that was originally written in Paris. Another huge success was Der Bettelstudent. He co-wrote this with Friedrich Zell. This show featured music by Carl Millöcker. He also wrote the words for the opera Zarya in 1877. These works made him a very important name in music history.

His influence reached far beyond the theater stage. Many of his stories were turned into movies over many years. Directors in Germany, the UK, and Italy made films based on his work. For instance, the film Waltz Time was based on Die Fledermaus. His operetta Fatinitza even changed the game of chess. The show featured a chess game in its second act. This led to a chess move called the Seekadettenmatt. In English, players call this the Légal Trap.
