He was an expert in old languages like Greek and Latin. Many people think he was a great scholar. One writer even called him the greatest scholar in Europe. Bentley helped start a new way of studying history through language. This work is called historical philology. He used his skills to find the truth in very old books. He was very good at fixing mistakes in ancient texts. This skill made him a leader among all English scholars.

Bentley had a very special way of working with old writings. He could look at a text and see where it was wrong. He would then fix the broken parts with great certainty. In 1699, he wrote a famous paper about the Epistles of Phalaris. People thought these letters were from a leader in the 6th century BCE. Bentley proved they were actually fakes made much later. A Greek writer had made them in the 2nd century CE. This big discovery is still seen as a landmark in his field.
