He lived during a time of great discovery. He spent much of his life teaching others about math and stars. Briggs was a man who loved to study and learn. He was also a very religious person. He preferred a quiet life of study over having lots of money. He was known for being a very honest man. People often asked him for help with many different jobs.

Briggs helped make math much easier to use for everyone. A man named John Napier first invented a way to use logarithms. Logarithms are special tables of numbers used for hard math. Napier's original system was quite difficult to work with. Briggs had a great idea to change how they worked. He suggested using a system called base 10 logarithms. In this new system, the logarithm of 10 is exactly 1. This change made the math much more simple and helpful.

Briggs grew up in Yorkshire, England, near a place called Halifax. He went to study at St John's College in Cambridge. He graduated from that college in the year 1581. Later, he became the first professor of geometry at Gresham College in London. He taught there for nearly 23 years. In 1619, he became a professor at the University of Oxford. He visited John Napier in Edinburgh to talk about math. These visits helped them agree on the new logarithm system.

Briggs wrote many large books filled with important numbers. In 1617, he published a book called Logarithmorum Chilias Prima. This book gave the logarithms for the first 1,000 numbers. In 1624, he published another big book called Arithmetica Logarithmica. This work contained logarithms for 30,000 different natural numbers. These numbers were calculated to fourteen decimal places. He also wrote about maps and the Northwest Passage. His writing about a map once suggested California was an island.

His work helped many people in many different jobs. Sailors used his math to help them navigate the seas. People working in mines used his ideas to help them too. He even helped people study the stars in the sky. His math was used for surveying and for many other things. Today, we still remember his great work in science. There is even a crater on the moon named after him.
