Common logarithm

A common logarithm is a special math tool using the number 10 as its base.

It is also called a decimal or decadic logarithm. You might see it written as log or sometimes with a capital L. This tool helps us work with very large or very small numbers easily. It turns hard math problems into simpler ones. Instead of doing long multiplication, you can use addition. Instead of long division, you can use subtraction. This makes big calculations much faster and helps people avoid mistakes.

Every common logarithm is made of two distinct parts. The first part is the integer part, called the characteristic.

The second part is the fractional part, called the mantissa. The mantissa stays the same for numbers that differ by powers of ten. For example, the numbers 5, 50, and 500 all share the same mantissa. To find the characteristic, you just count how many places to move a decimal point. This clever system meant that old math tables did not need to list every single number. They only had to list the mantissa for a specific range of numbers.

History shows us how important these tools once were.

In the 17th century, a British mathematician named Henry Briggs worked on this idea. He visited John Napier in Edinburgh to suggest changes to Napier's own work. Briggs helped develop the values we now call Briggsian logarithms. Before the 1970s, people did not have handheld electronic calculators. Scientists, engineers, and sailors used printed log tables for their work. These tables were often found in the back of many school textbooks. They were essential for navigation and complex engineering tasks.

Logarithms can also be negative. This happens when you are looking at positive numbers that are less than 1. For instance, the logarithm of 0.1 is -1. To make things easier, mathematicians use a special way called bar notation.

In bar notation, a bar is placed over the characteristic to show it is negative. The mantissa part stays positive even when the whole number is negative. This allows people to use the same tables for both large and small numbers. It keeps the math organized and much easier to read out loud.

Today, we see these tools in a different way. Most modern calculators use the "log" button for the common logarithm.

However, mathematicians often use "log" to mean a different kind called the natural logarithm. This can sometimes cause confusion between engineers and mathematicians. The natural logarithm uses a different base near 2.71828. Because calculators were designed by engineers, they usually follow the common logarithm style. Even though we have computers now, the logic of logarithms is still a huge part of math.
