In this condition, the immune system attacks the joints. The immune system is the part of the body that fights germs. This attack causes swelling and warmth in the joints. It can also make the bone and cartilage hurt. Most people feel stiffness after they rest. This stiffness is often worse in the morning.

Joints in the hands and wrists are often involved. The same joints are usually affected on both sides of the body. Over time, the joints can change shape. This is called a deformity. One example is a swan neck deformity. This makes a finger look like a swan's neck.

This disease can also affect other parts of the body. It can affect the eyes, lungs, and heart. Some people also feel very tired or have a fever. Doctors use X-rays and tests to help find the disease. They use medicine to reduce pain and swelling. Some people also use braces to help them move.
