It happens when the cartilage in a joint breaks down. Cartilage is the soft part that covers the ends of bones. When it wears away, the bone underneath can also change. This can lead to pain and stiffness. Some people also feel swelling in their joints.

This condition often affects the hands, knees, and hips.

It can also happen in the neck or lower back. Many people feel more stiff in the morning. Pain can also come from moving up and down stairs. Some joints might even make a crackling noise when they move. This is called crepitus.

There are many reasons why this happens. It can come from an old injury. It can also come from being overweight. Some people are even born with it due to their family history.

Doctors can use X-rays to see the changes in the bone. They may see small bony growths called osteophytes.

To help with the pain, people can use medicine. Gentle exercise and losing weight can also help. If the pain is very bad, a person might need surgery to replace the joint.
