It happens when small tubes called arteries tighten. This is called vasoconstriction. This tightening stops blood from flowing well.

When this happens, the skin often turns white. Then, it may turn blue.

The area might feel cold or numb. When blood flows back, the skin turns red. This can cause a stinging feeling. These episodes can last for minutes or hours.

Cold weather or stress can start these changes. About 4% of people have this condition.

Doctors group the condition into two types. Primary Raynaud's happens on its own. It often starts in young people. Secondary Raynaud's is caused by other health problems. It usually affects older people.

To help, many people stay warm. Doctors may also suggest stopping smoking. For some, medicine can help blood flow better. In rare, severe cases, skin sores can form.
