Reuters is one of the largest news agencies in the world. A news agency is a group that gathers information and sends it to many other places.

It provides stories and pictures to newspapers, radio stations, and television channels. Today, Reuters is owned by the Thomson Reuters Corporation. This company is based in Canada. In December 2024, it was the 27th most visited news site on the internet. More than 105 million people read its news in a single month. It is a very important way that people learn about what is happening globally.

How the news travels has changed a lot over time. In 1850, Paul Reuter used a prototype service to send messages. He used homing pigeons and the electric telegraph to do this. The telegraph sends messages through wires using electricity. Later, the company grew by using new tools as they were invented. In 1923, Reuters began using radio to send news across the world. In the 1960s, they were among the first to use computers to send financial data over oceans. Now, they use the internet to reach people everywhere very quickly.

The history of the agency began in London in 1851. Paul Julius Reuter, a German baron, started the company there. He first worked at a book-publishing firm in Berlin. His company at first focused on commercial news for banks and businesses. In 1858, the London Morning Advertiser became its first newspaper client. In 1865, Reuter turned his business into a limited company. His son, Herbert de Reuter, later took over as the managing director. The company has survived many changes and owners since those early days.

Reuters is a very large operation with many workers. It employs around 2,500 journalists and 600 photojournalists. These people work in about 200 different locations around the globe. They write their news in 16 different languages. The agency has also faced many hard times while reporting. Some journalists have lost their lives while working in dangerous places like Iraq, Gaza, or Sierra Leone. In 2018, two journalists were even sent to prison in Myanmar for their work. Despite these challenges, the agency continues to report from almost every country.

Reporting news is a job that requires great care and skill. Reuters journalists follow specific rules called the Standards and Values. These rules help them stay fair and keep their work accurate. Because they do a good job, they have won many awards. Since 2008, the agency has won 13 Pulitzer Prizes. These are special honors given for excellent reporting or photography. For example, they won in 2024 for reporting on businesses owned by Elon Musk. They also won for their photos of the protests in Hong Kong. Their work helps the whole world understand important events.
